David Gentleman

I recently attended an inspiring exhibition of the work of David Gentleman entitled “The Kite Needs the String” at the Manchester Metropolitan University Special Collections, Sir Kenneth Green Library www.specialcollections.mmu.ac.uk This is a great resource for anyone interested in the visual arts.

The gallery was filled with colorful graphic examples of Gentleman’s works. I loved his early compositions for Penguin Books produced between 1967 – 1979. l enjoyed seeing his original woodcut blocks, prolific sketchbook drawings and a box containing the tools of his trade (along with one of my own favorites drawing implements – a black china graph pencil.) The exhibition continues until 19 March 2011 check website for the collections opening hours. The catalogue is excellent value and contains much of the information from the exhibition too.
